Facing the Familiar and the Foreign

Weaving Life

I went to the screening of Weaving Life today at Eastern Mennonite University!  Weaving Life is an hour-long documentary about the life and death of peacemaker Dan Terry–who was an American humanitarian aid worker in Afghanistan.  In 2010, himself and nine other humanitarian aid workers were assassinated.  This film shows his devout love for Afghanistan.  It really strikes me because we tend to think of Afghanistan in a negative way and a place we would never want to visit, and it was one of Dan’s favorite places to go.  He loved the landscape, the food, the culture, the people, everything.  It got me looking and thinking about Afghanistan in a different light.

I was so impressed by this documentary.  I’m not normally a huge fan of watching documentaries, but this one was wonderful!  What is most impressive is that this film was made by students at EMU just like me!

This is a picture of some of the students who helped produce the documentary:)  Paulette Moore (second to the left) is the executive producer and EMU media arts and peace-building professor.

Jonathan Larson, friend of Dan Terry and author of Making Friends Among the Taliban, was also there and spoke about his personal experiences with Dan and Afghanistan.  He was also available after the program for book signing!

If you are thinking, “oh no, I wish I could have came to that screening!”–don’t worry!  There is another screening tomorrow night, October 26th, at Park View Mennonite Church at 7:30:)
